Dear Parents,
Welcome to what will perhaps be the most exciting and eventful school year of your son or daughter (‘s) life thus far. We trust that you all had a restful and enjoyable summer in preparation for a very busy school year. The Counseling Department is looking forward to the year ahead, and we are anticipating that our time together will be productive as well as memorable.
It probably seems like only yesterday that you were sending your child off to kindergarten, and now they have begun their long awaited senior year. This is the year when everything comes together, and students and parents alike see the rewards of their hard work and planning. Yet, before we can celebrate these accomplishments and allow them to embark on their futures we must establish clear expectations. All seniors should continue to work hard, complete all graduation requirements, and utilize all available learning experiences during their final year at Northwest High School.
Their senior year is their opportunity to strengthen their skills and broaden their experiences, in school and out, to prepare for all of the challenges ahead. A successful senior year can help launch them on the path to a successful future. We will be keeping all of you informed through out the year of upcoming events and important deadlines through mailings, phone calls, and on our guidance website. Please feel free to contact us anytime that you have any questions or concerns regarding your son or daughter. We look forward to working with each and every one of you.

Checklist For High School Seniors
Please see your counselor to make sure you are on track for graduation.
Register for the next ACT or SAT if you haven't already done so. If this is the first time taking either test make sure to sign up for the writing portion of the test.
Well before your application deadlines ask your counselors, teachers, and/or administrators for letters of recommendation. Provide them with a student information sheet and allow two weeks for them to complete these letters. Keep in mind you may not be the only student for whom they are writing one.
Apply to the colleges you have chosen - Pay Close Attention To Deadlines!
Any student needing official transcripts should request them in the guidance office or see Mrs. Cooper the guidance secretary.
Any student athletes who are planning on participating in Division I or Division II college athletics needs to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at web1.ncaa.org.
Check updated scholarship opportunities weekly on the school website, and if you have any questions please contact your counselor or Mrs. Cooper the guidance secretary.
Complete FAFSA on line beginning October 1st using your FSA ID.
An FSA ID gives you access to Federal Student Aid’s online systems and can serve as your legal signature.
Only create an FSA ID using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You are not authorized to create an FSA ID on behalf of someone else, including a family member. Misrepresentation of your identity to the federal government could result in criminal or civil penalties.
If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can create it at fsaid.ed.gov.
Complete and return financial aid forms for the colleges.
Attend financial aid information meetings.
Honors Diploma Criteria
*Please be informed of the following criteria for obtaining an Honors Diploma in the state of Ohio and from Northwest Local Schools.
Must meet 7 of the 8 criteria:
1. 4 units of English
2. 4 units of Mathematics (including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or equivalent and another higher level course or a four-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content)
3. 4 units of science (including physics, AP Biology and chemistry or a CCP equivalent )
4. 4 units of Social Studies
5. 3 units of Foreign Language, including at least 2 units in each language studied
6. 1 unit of a Fine Art
7. 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
8. 27 ACT Composite Score/1210 SAT Composite Score
